(i love being a student here, but i could do without the whole dorm life/shared kitchen bit.)
this is the third time i've had food stolen, and it's extremely frustrating because food is very affordable here (i have yet to spend more than 20 euro in one trip to the grocery store). i could understand if someone were stealing out of necessity, but to steal my 87-cent loaf of bread?? seriously.
the only thing that keeps me from installing a nannycam in the kitchen is knowing that karma will eventually catch up with them.

friday, erica and i met up with our art history class at the frans hals museum in haarlem for our first class trip. it was kind of fun navigating the train here for the first time.

when we got to haarlem, we walked across town to the museum.

the first section of the museum gave a kind of overview of haarlem, with statistics and random trivia, like tulipmania:

(tulipmania was a real thing! when tulips were first brought to the netherlands from turkey, people literally went crazy over them, even selling their houses for a single bulb--or even an i.o.u. then in 1637, the tulip market collapsed, stock-market style, and thousands of people were left with nothing.)
my teacher's phd is in 17th century dutch art, so she knew a lot about the paintings in the museum.

take this painting, for instance:

it was only recently discovered that the painting was actually a self-portrait of the artist and his family:

(my teacher's the one who made the discovery!)
sucks to be this guy...

one thing that is very cool about studying art here is that you can see a painting of something in a museum...

...and then you can step outside and see the real thing!

it's the bavo church, and for 2 euro you can tour the inside of it, so we did.

the entire floor is made out of gravestones. there are about 1500 of them, some dating as far back as the 15th century. hella creepy!

i noticed a hole in one of the gravestones, so i stuck my camera in it and turned on the flash...

(i have no idea what that is, nor do i want to know!)
after getting kicked out of the church (because it was closing), we got some snacks and hung out in the town square for a bit.

people eat fries with mayo here.

(i was skeptical at first, but it was quick to grow on me. it is indeed quite delicious, and it will be sad when i come back to the states and have to eat them with ketchup again.)
we walked back to the station, taking in the city and realizing that it looks pretty much like leiden. it's even got--get this--canals.

random sleeping dude made the train ride back to leiden slightly awkward:

our next class trip is wednesday at the rijksmuseum in amsterdam. we decided to go a couple of days early, stay at a hostel, check out amsterdam, meet up with our class at the museum wednesday and come back afterwards.
see you then,
b.

you know.... just because you'll be back in the states doesn't mean you have to stop eating fries and mayo... if i recall, i think grocery stores here carry that stuff too... :P <3
Can you find a small used dorm room frig over there to rent or purchase, and sell later?
